Supporting the Vine

For many of us, 'up front roles' just do not appeal - far better to be in the background! If this is you, the book The Trellis and the Vine by Colin Marshall and Tony Payne is for you.

Colin and Tony point out, quite rightly, that the vine cannot be fruitful unless it is supported well by the trellis.

There are many people at St Nicolas who work tirelessly and graciously behind the scenes. Without their work, the ministry of the church would collapse!

Many of the gifts of the Holy Spirit are entirely practical, such as the gift of Helps or the gift of Administration. All of the Spirit's gifts are for the upbuilding of the church and valued just as much as the more visible gifts.

The roles below include Administration, Finance and Communications.

Administration

As with any organisation, good administration is key to its proper functioning.

At St Nicolas, there are many and varied administrative roles. Quite often there is a need for a capable administrator to step in for someone else who is unwell or on holiday. In other areas there is a need for someone to take on the primary responsibility for a particular role.

Please use the 'Contact Me' buttons below if you feel drawn to help in any of these ways.

Church Office Stand-in

When our Church Administrator is away, there is a need for someone to answer the phone and field other enquiries so that people are not left wondering when they will get a response. This is occassional work, and mostly can be scheduled in advance. We aim for the team to cover the area each weekday morning.

Minutes Secretary

The PCC is made up of the Trustees of St Nicolas Bookham. It meets every other month to discuss and determine financial affairs, maintenance of assets and our church's mission. The Standing Committtee acts on its behalf where needed between meetings.

Services Rota Management

The services rota covers all of the roles required to conduct a service. Each team leader completes their own section of the rota. However, the rota itself needs overall management on a regular basis. This includes creating a blank rota covering four months at a time, completing some of the key components, and each month printing it for display in the sacristy.

Finance

Finance encompasses a range of tasks, large and small, from receiving income and making payments (and accounting for both), to one-off tasks such as periodically reviewing our utility contracts to ensure we are getting best value for money and checking that our reserves are placed where they can earn the best rates of interest. It also covers the management of our regular gift-aid donors and their donations.

Communications

The communications role at St Nicolas is still largely to be defined, and gives the opportunity for creative shaping.

The communications ethos and standards have been defined, and what is needed is to pull together a team of people who can help and advise those needing to communicate on how best to do that. Different channels and technologies would suit different needs best.

Externally, there is also a need for making St Nicolas more visible in the regular media that circulate locally.

Internally, St Nicolas is in the process of selecting and implementing a new Church Management system and associated Website.
