Praying Together at St Nicolas

Prayer is a vital part of Christian life and that is as true here at St Nicolas as anywhere. As it says in Ephesians chapter 6:18

"Pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the Lord’s people."

"Praying Together" is one of three aspects of connecting more closely with the community at St Nicolas. Each is supported by both a leaflet and a section of our website. The others are:

Each of the links below will lead you to more detail about the areas you are interested in or help with. Some allow you to ask for the leader of that area to make contact with you.

When using the "Contact Me" button, please include your name, contact details and the reason for your request. If you want a copy of the request, please add yourself to the address line.

Regular Prayer Meetings

We have a number of prayer meetings which happen regularly:

  • Monday and Wednesday prayers  - 8.30-9.15 am  - online - where we meet to pray for those who have asked for prayer

  • Saturday prayers – 9-9.30 - 2nd and 4th Saturday - online

  • Church Development Plan (CDP) prayers - 10-11 am - 1st Saturday in person in the church room

  • Silent Prayer group – 12-12.45pm - 4th Monday in person

All are welcome. If you want to join the online meetings, or you want to be added to the distribution list for the CDP Prayer updates, please press the "Contact Me" button he.

Prayer Partners

You may also wish to pray regularly with someone (a prayer buddy) or in a small group (‘Prayer Triplet’)

Prayer Triplets are small, voluntary groups of three (sometimes 2–4) individuals who meet regularly to pray for, support, encourage and challenge each other. They provide a confidential, low-pressure space for sharing, spiritual growth, and focused prayer for personal needs, the church and the world. The concept is based on Matthew 18:20, "For where two or three gather in my name, there am I with them”.

If you are interested in praying with others in this way please talk to a member of the Ministry Team.

Personal Prayer and Study Resources

Here you can find links to personal prayer and study resources (apps, websites, books etc.) that have all been recommended by church members at St Nicolas.

We hope you will find them helpful in your prayer life and discipleship journey. Each will appeal to different people. Some enable a time of daily prayer and study, others are more for learning, study or reflection. Many have more detail on their websites and most are free to access.

Other Prayer Ministries

Prayer often engages us with the personal lives of others, particularly at a time of vulnerability. Such ministry is also seen as a personal calling from God, endorsed by the gifting of the Holy Spirit. Therefore these ministeries are entered into by invitation only, and after a period of discernment.

If you feel called to a ministry of prayer, we recommend that you join one of our regular prayer meetings and discuss your sense of calling with the Rector.

These ministries are conducted either in private by our team of 'Prayer Warriors'; or in person with those being prayed with by members of our Prayer Ministry team. (A prayer warrior is a Christian who engages in intense, persistent, and intercessory prayer, acting as a spiritual advocate to fight for truth, intervene for others, and seek God’s will).

Focus on Prayer Group - Prayer Stations in church

The Focus on Prayer group designs, produce and display a range of prayer stations in church throughout the year. They help provide a focus for quiet prayer and reflection, welcoming all to St Nicolas - whether regular or occasional attenders or just visiting for services, private prayer, special events or any other reason. A few lines introduce the meaning of each theme, accompanied by a prayer and complementary activity designed to engage people of all ages and abilities.

All are invited to take a few minutes to sit, contemplate, reflect and pray in different ways, helping mindfulness in prayer. Examples might include plaiting a few strands of coloured wool, colouring a paper butterfly or writing a prayer on shapes to hang on our prayer tree.

We meet periodically either in person or via online video calls. New group members with fresh ideas and practical contributions are welcome.
