If you have a girl or boy who is enthusiastic, energetic and responds to a challenge, there may be a place for her or him in St Nicolas' Choir. Ideally applicants will be aged between 8 and 15 years of age.
St Nicolas' Choir consists of children and adults who proudly maintain its long-standing musical tradition. The Choir is affiliated to the Royal School of Church Music (RSCM), with which the choir has close connections.
Thursdays
Choir Practice in church.
Junior choir (7+ years) 6.30pm to 8.15pm.
Senior choir 7.45pm to 9.00pm.
Sundays
We sing for the 10.00am service, and the 11.15am service on the first Sunday of the month.
The practice starts promptly at 9.30am.
This page sets out some of the many opportunities open to, and requirements of, a chorister in St Nicolas' Church Choir.
Opportunities:
- To benefit from a free musical education that could enable them to pass the RSCM Dean's and Bishop's awards.
- To increase powers of concentration
- To grow up as active and important members of a Christian community during the most formative years with opportunities to continue in the Choir right through the teenage years
- To sing some of the finest music written for church worship
- To make new friends
- To be prepared by the clergy of the parish forconfirmation (if parents wish it).
A chorister is expected:
- To help lead the singing at services in St Nicolas' church and produce music to enrich our worship of God
- To sing at special services held in church, such as weddings (for which the choristers receive extra pocket money)
- To attend weekly rehearsals in preparation for the services, on a regular basis (homework and family commitments permitting)
- To attempt simple tests to mark general progress and musical development. Attainment leads to the award of Ribbons and an increase in pocket money. It also measures their ability to take and pass RSCM exams
- To work and behave in such a way as to be a good example to the choir and to maintain the reputation of the Choir and the church.
